Lesson Objectives
- Understanding that neurons are not randomly distributed throughout the brain. Neurons in the cortex that process sensory information from the same regions in the body are clustered together. These orderly spatial arrangements of neurons are called representations, and together the representations form 'topographic maps'.
- Understanding that topographical maps can be refined through skill learning or after an injury to the nervous system - this reorganization is referred to as 'brain plasticity'.
- Understanding brain plasticity is mediated by altering connectivity between different brain regions.
- Understanding how changes in connectivity are controlled will inform future therapies for recovery from brain and spinal cord injury.
