Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability among children, young adults, and seniors in the United States. Each year an estimated 1.5 million Americans sustain a TBI. An estimated 5.3 million Americans live with a TBI-related disability. TBI can cause a variety of impairments including cognitive, motor, vision, as well as speech and language.

Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness

According to the Centers for Disease, adolescents, young adults, and adults older than 74 years of age are among the highest risk of having a TBI from:

  • Falls 35%
  • Motor vehicle–related injuries 17%
  • Sports injuries 17%
    • Top 10 sports-related head injury among children under 14:
      • Cycling
      • Football
      • Baseball/Softball
      • Basketball
      • Skateboard/Scooters
      • Water Sports (Scuba Diving, Swimming/Diving, Water Polo, Wakeboarding, Water Skiing, and Water Tubing)

Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention

Be Mindful and Protect Your Brain

  • Fall Prevention Tips: Reducing the use the medications with side effects that impair balance and coordination. Have your eyes checked once a year, and update eyeglasses if needed. Prevent falls at home by modifying living environments. Keep areas with stairs brightly lighting. Clear snow and ice on walkways in the winter.
  • Motor Vehicle Tips: Wear a seat belt while driving. Follow child safety car seat laws and sizing guidelines. Drive cars with air bags and backup cameras. Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Sports-related Injury Tips: Wear the correct sized helmet when you ride a bike, scooter, skateboard, ice skate, in-line skate, horseback ride, ski or snowboard. Wear proper fitting protective headgear designed for appropriate sports. 
  • Prevent Head Injuries in Adolescents and Children: Make living and play areas safe for children. Install window guards and safety gates at the bottom and top of stairs. Secure TV’s, bookcase, furniture to walls. Avoid using infant walkers, etc. Make sure backyard playgrounds have soft material under it, such as mulch or sand. Avoid backyard trampolines.

We partnered with Blythedale Children’s Hospital accelerate neurorehabilitation treatments for adolescents and children through the Burke-Blythedale Pediatric Neuroscience Research Collaboration
