Research Technician
Job Description
The Ratan Laboratory at Burke Neurological Institute focuses on developing novel therapeutics for stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. We are currently seeking a talented, motivated, and enthusiastic candidate for a Research Technician position with laboratory experience in either animal husbandry, rodent behavioral techniques, cell culture or molecular biology. Experienced technicians, recent graduates, and current students are all encouraged to apply.
The focus of our lab is in identifying how physiological stresses (oxidative stress, hypoxia, DNA damage, glucose deprivation) are sensed by the nervous system and transduced into adaptive or maladaptive transcriptional responses. In cases where transcription is adaptive, we have developed drugs that manipulate these sensors and allow us to build “resilience” in a host of diseases.
Responsibilities
- Animal husbandry
- Genotyping
- Performing rodent behavioral testing, trans-cardial perfusion, and harvesting of neural tissue for processing
- Cell culture and immunocytochemistry
- Assisting with surgical and performing post-operative care of rodents
Qualifications
- An ability to learn, develop, and apply new techniques
- A minimum of a B.S.
- 1+ years of lab experience, including knowledge of histology techniques, general techniques in molecular biology, and ability to operate standard Biochemistry/Molecular Biology laboratory equipment
- Skill, knowledge, and experience with experimental animals
- Organizational and note-keeping skills and the ability to use word processing, spreadsheet software and databases for Mac and PC
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in an interactive and collaborative environment
- Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions, including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, and use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, expected
- A minimum of two-year commitment to working in the laboratory

Compensation
- Salary Range: ($24.73 - $38.46 hourly)/$45,000 to $70,000 annual salary based on years of experience.
