Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Research Technician in our Laboratory for Systems Neuroscience of Vision, led by James H. Marshel, Ph.D., at the Burke Neurological Institute in White Plains, NY.

The Marshel laboratory (https://burke.weill.cornell.edu/marshel-lab) is interested in understanding neural circuit mechanisms underlying visual perception and sensory association learning. We study the link between neural activity in sensory circuits with circuit computation, perception, and behavior by developing and applying novel approaches to map neural circuits. We use transgenic animals, viral transduction, optogenetic and advanced optical and photonics tools including multiphoton microscopy and holography. This position will participate in several key areas of systems neuroscience research, including animal behavior, animal survival surgery, in vivo imaging, molecular cloning, genotyping, histology, image processing and analysis. This will also include assistance of principal investigator in managing the laboratory resources and environment.

Candidates should have laboratory experience in either animal behavioral analysis, molecular biology techniques, animal surgeries, imaging, or bioengineering. Several positions are available; strong candidates with experience in specific domains and a passion for systems neuroscience research are encouraged to apply. A four-year degree in biology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics or related field and a general understanding of biological sciences principles is required. At least 1-2 years of lab experience is required. Candidates graduating soon or recently graduated from a degree program (bachelor's or master's) are encouraged to apply who have demonstrated academic success and gained lab experience from beyond coursework. This experience should be explained in detail in the cover letter or resume. Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly learn and master computer programs and strong analytical skills and judgment are required. Experience with animal training, behavioral assays, surgeries, and breeding/genotyping will be highly valued. Histology, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, multiphoton microscopy, or equivalent experience is desired. Proficiency with basic molecular biology, biochemical assays, and cell culture techniques are a plus.

Performance of technical procedures, interpretation of results, recognition of irregularities, recommendations for modification of techniques and approaches will be expected. The research technician and lab manager must be self-motivated, a quick learner, technically adept, accurate, efficient, organized and keep detailed records. The ability to work under tight deadlines with general guidance is essential. The research technician and lab manager must also have strong general computer skills (including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint), and must show preparedness to be trained to use specialized scientific software. Some familiarity and experience with computer programing (MATLAB or Python) is a plus. The research technician and lab manager must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to planning and performing experiments in support of PI’s research projects
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes
  • Perform basic analysis of the results in conjunction with the PI and senior lab members
  • Perform genotyping, plasmid cloning, bacterial culture, cryo-sectioning, immunohistochemistry
  • Rodent behavioral testing, trans-cardial perfusion, and harvesting of neural tissue for processing
  • Assisting with surgery and performing post-operative care of rodents
  • Assisting with in vivo imaging and optogenetics experiments
  • Confocal imaging of histological preparations
  • General lab maintenance, maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory, safety records and provide general lab and miscellaneous support as needed.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work as required by research

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., biology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, or a healthcare-related discipline).
  • 1-2 years of biology lab experience. Candidates graduating soon or recently graduated from a degree program (bachelor's or master's) are encouraged to apply who have demonstrated academic success and gained significant lab experience from beyond coursework
  • Skill, knowledge, and experience with experimental animals
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs
  • Must be self-motivated, a quick learner, technically adept, accurate, efficient, organized and keep detailed records
  • Ability to perform technical procedures, interpretation of results, recognition of irregularities, recommendations for modification of techniques and approaches
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing research needs.

Compensation

Salary Range: $27.47-$30.22 hourly ($50,000 to $55,000 annual). Non Exempt Hourly position; based on experience.
