Burke Senior Veterinarian Technician/Lead

Job Description

Under minimal guidance, provides health care to laboratory animals and provides veterinary technical support to investigators and their research staff. Provides select training and oversight to BRARC husbandry staff and assumes select supervisory/management responsibilities in the absence of the BRARC Manager. 

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the implementation of preventive health programs for various species.
  • Monitors animals to assess their health and well-being. Under minimal supervision, assesses common disease conditions; escalates issues to veterinarians at RARC-NYC when appropriate. Administers clinical treatments, collects diagnostic/environmental samples and administers euthanasia as necessary.
  • Accurately maintains electronic health records.
  • Records controlled substance inventory and expiration date monitoring; and dispenses supplies, medication and controlled substances to investigators. Generate and maintain log sheet. May order and receive supplies upon request.
  • • Assists with the education and quality assurance training of animal handling skills and experimental procedures.
  • Serve as backup to conduct facility orientation tours.
  • Is knowledgeable regarding departmental SOP's, institutional guidelines, local, state and federal regulations, and AAALAC accreditation standards. Ensures research staff and husbandry staff understand and adhere to these standards.
  • Reports issues of non-compliance to Education and Quality Assurance staff in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Monitors work progress by maintaining dialogue with husbandry staff on work and results; communicates ongoing performance feedback to husbandry staff based on established SOPs. Keeps Manager apprised of staff performance.
  • Trains animal care staff according to approved SOPs and other established policies. Observe work results and prepares written staff assessments to ensure quality of animal care. Retrains staff on specific procedures as needed. Follows up with staff regularly to ensure compliance with all animal care activities, including, but not limited to, cage change and preparation, animal euthanasia, and facility and equipment maintenance.
  • Performs various EnCCoMPass application related functions including oversight of census scans and review of reports for accuracy; follows up on and communication with research staff for transfer errors and noncompliance issues such as SPHUB, DND and GOC cage conditions; and review of online Activity Logs for staff rooms tasks and cage change records.
  •  Assumes select Vivarium Core supervisory/management responsibilities in the absence of the BRARC Manager.
  • May assist with experimental and surgical procedures, and in pre- and post-operative care of laboratory animals under the guidance of investigators or RARC veterinarians. Administers anesthesia and monitors anesthetized animals during surgical procedures.
  •  Trains and assists investigators and their staff and Vivarium Core staff with rodent breeding colony management, including setting up and retiring mating pairs, weaning, detailedecordkeeping and performing associated technical procedures, including collecting tissues for genotyping and phenotype observations. 
  • Additional tasks as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree in veterinary science, Veterinary Technology, or Animal Health Science.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences or Veterinary Technology preferred.
    • AALAS certification at Laboratory animal Technician (LAT) level or higher or Academy of Surgical Research (ASR) certification (any level)
  • NY State Veterinary Technician Licensure is highly desired.
  • 2 + years’ experience working with animals.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain focus despite frequent interruptions.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Work schedule may include long working days, weekends and holidays.

Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches, needles and other sharp instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, human xenografts, and toxic chemicals; Potential exposure to dust, dirt, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and hot and humid surroundings; Exposure to animal allergens.

Compensation

Range $36.00-$41.00/hr. based on degree/experience. Work week varies from 31-35 hours per week. Benefit eligible.
