New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey says federal funding will help spinal cord research at an institute in Westchester County.

Lowey, a Democrat who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, says the more than $2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health is for Burke Neurological Institute in White Plains. The funding will be spread across five years to study strategies for rehabilitation after spinal cord trauma that results from injury, stroke, cerebral palsy and more. The NIH grant will help researchers focus on limb function and could have broad implications in helping those with spinal cord injuries walk and run without assistance.
