Dr. McDowell - Founder

Celebrating a Visionary in Neurorehabilitation: The Legacy of Fletcher McDowell, MD

The Burke Neurological Institute (BNI), a premier academic affiliate of Weill Cornell Medicine, stands today as a beacon of innovation and hope in neurological recovery—thanks to the vision and leadership of its founder and first Executive Director, Fletcher McDowell, MD.

Dr. McDowell’s transformative journey began in 1978, when he launched BNI in White Plains, NY, as a bold new model for neuroscience research focused on recovery and repair. Before that, he served as Board Chair and CEO of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and held key academic roles at Weill Cornell Medicine, including Associate Dean and the Burke Professorship.

A trailblazing clinician-scientist, Dr. McDowell played a pivotal role in developing Sinemet, the gold-standard treatment for Parkinson’s disease, and championed the use of robotics in rehabilitation—ushering in a new era of precision and efficacy in restoring movement. Today, robotic-assisted rehab has become a global standard, a powerful testament to BNI’s and Dr. McDowell’s enduring impact on care and recovery.

Under his leadership, BNI emerged as one of the nation's most forward-thinking, independent research institutions dedicated to revolutionizing rehabilitation for stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, and more. His vision brought together scientists, clinicians, and engineers working on over 75 cutting-edge projects—from molecular biology and stem cell therapy to drug discovery, non-invasive brain stimulation, and telemedicine.

BNI now operates in a state-of-the-art 55,000 square foot facility, home to more than 100 passionate professionals united by a single goal: to discover and deliver treatments that restore ability and improve lives.
