A Big Leap Toward Finding Cures for Disabilities Caused by Stroke

The Burke Neurological Institute, the University of Rochester Medical Center and Wadsworth Center of the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) were recently awarded a $5 million grant from the Empire State Development Corporation to enable NeuroCuresNY (NCNY) to launch a two-year pilot starting in January 2020.

Transformational Selenium Peptide Provides New Nutritional Medicine for Treating Stroke
A team of scientists have discovered that selenium, a micronutrient, can help boost the antioxidant system on the heels of stroke in animals and suggests that a similar treatment could be used to limit brain damage in patients. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in the United States, occurring once every 40 seconds.

Lowey Announces more than $2.3 Million in Federal Funding for Burke Neurological Institute
National Institutes of Health grant will be used to study potential therapeutic strategies for spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Regulating Blood Supply to Limbs Improves Stroke Recovery
Cutting off and then restoring blood supply to a limb following a stroke reduces tissue damage and swelling and improves functional recovery, according to a new study in mice from scientists at the Burke Neurological Institute published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Dr. Dianna Willis to Collaborate on a Pain Treatment Project Granted by NIH HEAL Funding
Professors of Weill Cornell Medicine, the Burke Neurological Institute, and the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute, have been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a project to develop a non-opioid, non-addicting medicine for a hard-to-treat form of pain called neuropathic pain.
